The Mullica Hill Walking Tour, With Places to Eat

Mullica Hill's Main Street is about a mile of buildings from the 1700s to the 1920s. The whole village has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1991. Walk it north to south, and you'll pass most of the town's restaurants on the way.

The Harrison Township Historical Society publishes a free self-guided tour, with a QR code at each stop, at mhwalk.com. The history below is drawn from it. We've added where to eat between stops.

North Main Street

Fuel up first. Harrison House Diner at 98 N. Main serves breakfast every day. It's at the north end of town, a good place to start.

  • St. Stephen's Episcopal Church (51 N. Main), consecrated in 1853. The bell tower came in 1879 and the town clock in 1880.
  • The Union Store (46 N. Main), a cooperative store from 1866 that anchored the north end of the village. It later helped spark the antiques revival.
  • Old Farmers National Bank (28 N. Main), a 1903 Romanesque Revival stone bank. Robbers took $8,370 from it in 1932.
  • The Mullica House (20 N. Main), early 1700s. It's believed to be the oldest standing building in old Harrison Township, named for settler Eric Mullica.
  • The Old Firehouse (14 N. Main), built in 1905 by Harmony Fire Company No. 1, which organized in 1827.

Across Raccoon Creek to the Old Mill

You cross Raccoon Creek on the bridge that replaced the old stone arch in 1919–1920. For over a century that arch was the only crossing east of Swedesboro.

  • The Old Mill (1 S. Main), 1880s. It began as a feed store beside the railroad and has been an antiques mall since 1967. It's also home to 322 BBQ.
  • The Warehouse (2 S. Main), around 1890. This was the produce shipping hub, and in 1922 a plane left from here carrying 800 pounds of asparagus to Massachusetts. Today it's Naples at the Warehouse.
  • Harmony Fire Company (4 S. Main) stands on the site of the village railroad station.

South Main Street

  • First Baptist Church (18 S. Main), 1845, the first Baptist congregation in Gloucester County.
  • The Harness Maker's Post Office (26 S. Main), around 1840. The village post office fit in one end of this house from 1897 to 1910. It's now Cherry On Top, for ice cream and fudge.
  • Coffee stop: Bella Grace Coffee & Cafe at 32 S. Main, in a house from about 1840.
  • Trinity Methodist Church (31 S. Main), an 1848 clapboard church that's now shops.
  • The Stratton House (39 S. Main), 1848, the red-brick home of Civil War captain Edward L. Stratton. Next door at 41, La Mademoiselle Macaron makes French macarons.
  • The Brick Row (South Main at High Street): three Federal-style brick houses from 1771, 1811 and about 1830. The old corner store beside them became the village's first self-service market. Today it's High Street Delicatessen. Across the street at 47, Blueplate is the sit-down lunch or dinner.
  • The Old Eagle Hotel (51 S. Main), a tavern established in 1772. The first Harrison Township Committee met here.
  • Old Town Hall (62 S. Main), built in 1871 with five-dollar shares and moved on rollers in 1920. It's now the Historical Society museum.
  • The Friends Meeting House (South Main and Woodstown Road), 1808. Quakers have worshipped on this ground since 1797.
